Disc protrusion is the initial stage of a damaged disc when the disc wall weakens causing it to extend beyond its normal size and shape. The wear and tear of aging can initiate a deterioration process that changes the structure of the disc and causes it to protrude into the spinal canal, pressing on nearby nerve roots, resulting in debilitating pain, numbness and tingling, loss of mobility, stiffness and soreness and muscle weakness.
An individual’s condition depends on the location of the protruding disc and the extent of the protrusion onto adjacent nerve roots. Conservative treatment including bed rest, pain medications, targeted low impact exercise and physical therapy often prove to be extremely effective in relieving pain. If these approaches don’t provide the desired results, Lumin PainCARE specialists may recommend minimally invasive surgery. We’ve helped thousands of North Texans successfully overcome protruding discs, gain relief from pain and return to normal daily activities.
