Spinal Narrowing

Spinal Narrowing, also known as spinal stenosis, can result from a number of causes including the effects of aging, disease, injury or genetic predisposition. The size of the spinal canal can be impacted by bone spurs, osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease and other factors. Stenosis itself does not usually cause symptoms unless the narrowing  leads to compression or irritation of nerve roots or the spinal cord. Factors that have been shown to contribute to spinal narrowing include genetics, age, obesity, smoking and a history of spinal injuries.

The effects of spinal narrowing can generally be treated with conservative approaches including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, epidural steroidal injections, exercise, stretching and other interventions over the course of several weeks or months. If these approaches don’t provide the desired pain relieving results, Lumin PainCARE specialists may recommend minimally invasive surgery.
