Kyphoplasty

Osteoporosis is a fairly common condition, and the chances of developing osteoporosis increases as we age, especially for women.  When the bones become weaker, chronic lower back and spine pain may develop because of fractures. Osteoporosis is a lifelong condition and once diagnosed an effective pain treatment is a must if you want to maintain your quality of life.

At Lumin PainCARE, our team has the expertise with the lower back pain treatment needed to address the damage caused by osteoporosis. Kyphoplasty is a micro invasive procedure that will reduce your pain and help straighten your spine

The kyphoplasty surgical procedure is designed to stop the pain caused by osteoporosis, a spinal fracture, to stabilize the bone, and to restore the lost vertebral body height due to the compression fracture. Kyphoplasty surgery is performed in office or at a hospital under local or general anesthesia

During the kyphoplasty surgery, a small incision is made in the back and where the doctor guides a narrow tube. Fluoroscopy is used to guide it to the correct position, the tube creates a path through the back into the fractured area through the pedicle of the involved vertebrae.

Using X-ray images, the doctor inserts a special balloon through the tube and into the vertebrae, then carefully inflates it. The balloon inflates elevating the fracture, returning the pieces to a more normal position. The soft inner bone is also compacted to create a cavity inside the vertebrae.

The balloon is removed and the doctor uses specially designed instruments under low pressure to fill the cavity with a cement-like material called polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). The material hardens quickly after being injected, stabilizing the bone.
